Why aqua therapy?
Aqua therapy offers an alternative form of rehabilitation and can be used in conjunction with more traditional outpatient therapies.
The pool is an excellent medium in which to rehabilitate those with musculoskeletal and some neurological problems. It provides an opportunity for people to exercise and gain strength while affording them a comfortable environment where they can re-initiate limb and body movement.
The buoyancy of the water facilitates mobility and assists with exercise. Its properties of decreasing impact while promoting movement allow a variety of individuals to benefit from this program. Coordination and aerobic activities can also be performed in the pool and water equipment can assist with resistance exercises for strengthening.
More About Aqua Therapy at Elite Physical Therapy
Our aqua therapy pool is specifically designed for aqua therapy. The water maintains a temperature of 96 degrees Fahrenheit. A pool session will last 45 minutes and most patients come in 2-3 times per week for 6-8 weeks. You will always have the instruction of a physical therapist, or physical therapist assistant with you in the pool area.
How do I get started?
A patient will need a prescription or an order for therapy. Some patients are candidates for Aqua Therapy while others are not, so it is always important to talk with your physician before starting.
Your next step is an initial evaluation. During your 45 minute evaluation you will meet with a physical therapist. He or she will go over your condition, pain or ailment and at that time your plan of care will be determined by your therapist. You will not get into the pool during the evaluation. After your evaluation, you will set up appointments for 2 weeks worth of visits with the receptionist.
Who can participate?
Individuals with a variety of disabilities and orthopedic conditions can participate in aqua therapy. People with back problems, knee injuries, ankle injuries, and other orthopaedic injuries are just a few of the individuals who can benefit from aqua therapy. While the pool can be used as a tool in most rehabilitation programs it is important to speak with your physician to see if aqua therapy is right for you. The heat of the pool can be problematic for certain neurological and cardiac conditions. Careful screening and program development by a physical therapist will assure safe participation. Though aqua therapy is not recommended for certain medical conditions, the vast majority of people can participate. Swimming experience is not necessary. |
